Lauryn Hill Reunites With Wyclef Jean At Essence Festival

A Fugees flashback was celebrated as Lauryn Hill reunites with Wyclef Jean

The 2022 Essence Festival in New Orleans featured a mini-Fugees reunion as Lauryn Hill reunites with Wyclef Jean on stage to perform their hip hop hits. In a surprise appearance thirty minutes into Wyclef’s set, Ms. Lauryn Hill showed up to perform her number-one, Grammy award-winning hit cover of Lori Lieberman’s “Killing Me Softly”.

Together, the two performed “How Many Mics”, “Fu-Gee-La”, and “Ready or Not” from their 1996 sophomore album The Score. It was surely a welcoming treat for the Caesars Superdome attendees as Lauryn Hill reunites With Wyclef Jean at Essence Festival—she’s not known to make surprise appearances.

Pras was not present at the show, but the group made plans to do their first gig as a group in 15 years to commemorate the 25th anniversary of The Score. Hill performed with the Fugees last September at the New York rooftop of Pier 17 at Manhattan’s South Street Seaport.

Unfortunately, the pandemic forced the Fugees to postpone their fall reunion tour. Then two months later, the entire tour was canceled. As Lauryn Hill reunites with Wyclef Jean at Essence Festival, it gives us hope that one of the greatest hip hop groups of all time will shortly come back on tour.
