MLK Is Coming To Fortnite To Help Educate America’s Youth
Epic Games has announced that MLK is coming to Fortnite. There will be an in-game exhibit named March Through Time that pays tribute to Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. by showing his “I Have a Dream” speech from 1963 in Washington, D.C.
Fortnite, the popular battle royale video game, will be partnering with TIME to present this March Through Time virtual event. It is not the first time Fortnite has held featured promos as music artists such as Marshmallow, Travis Scott, and Ariana Grande have all participated in virtual concerts within the game.
Although, this is the first time such a historical and prolific American figure has been featured, albeit a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. According to Epic Games, participants in the game will be teleported to a re-imagined Washington, D.C. and visit the Lincoln Memorial and National Mall to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s 17-minute speech.
“The experience extends with museum-inspired points of interest, and collaborative mini-game quests you complete with others,” stated Epic Games. “These activities progress players through the experience and bring to life important themes of Dr. King’s speech: we move forward when we work together.”
No one would have ever guessed that Epic Games and Time would collaborate so that MLK is coming to Fortnite, but it’s a bit worrisome to see how the execution will turn out and how the Fortnite community will react to March Through Time. The event should have a positive and educational impact on the Fortnite community and its youth, but If Epic Games can visually and graphically create something along the scale of their virtual concerts, it can become even greater. Who would have known that this year in 2021, MLK is coming to Fortnite.
