It only makes fitting that Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work would find a vehicle in the newest Polaroid Basquiat Collection, given that his renowned artwork serves as a blank canvas of its own. When Basquiat was at the height of his fame in the 1980s in downtown New York City, Polaroid was a popular camera brand. The company’s latest offering pays homage to this creative heritage in a striking way.
In a statement announcing the product line, the brand noted that the new Polaroid Basquiat Collection, which includes a Polaroid Now Generation 2 Camera, Color i-Type Film, and a shoulder strap, honors the renowned New York City artist and alludes to a “shared commitment to authenticity, spontaneity, and embracing imperfections.”
Basquiat’s “Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump” is transformed into a new form of artistic expression by the camera itself, paying homage to other artists who collaborated with Polaroid, such as Andy Warhol, David Bowie, and Keith Haring.
“We aim to pay tribute to Basquiat’s influence, motivating us to embrace authenticity and spontaneity in our creativity,” said Polaroid chairman Oskar Smolokowski about the Polaroid x Basquiat collab. “Andy Warhol and Maripol often photographed Basquiat on Polaroid film, capturing his essence, which in turn inspired Polaroid to curate this collection.”
The brand also stated that Basquiat’s “belief in beauty through improvisation aligns with the unpredictable nature of Polaroid photography, capturing genuine moments in their unedited form.” Basquiat’s own “raw and unfiltered” approach proved to be a perfect fit for Polaroid.
