The upcoming AND1 Netflix documentary focuses on the brand’s successful AND1 mixtape
As part of the Untold sports documentary series, the official trailer for The Rise and Fall of AND1 Netflix documentary has been released. It follows the development of the basketball apparel company AND1 and their touring basketball competition named the “AND1 Mixtape Tour”.
The Rise and Fall of AND1 Netflix documentary details how Tom Austin, Seth Berger, and Jay Coen Gilbert’s collaboration on a graduate school project at the The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania evolved into a significant basketball apparel and footwear business. The documentary also dives into the factors that contributed to the popular ’90s brand’s ascent and eventual demise.
The three friends went from selling t-shirts from a car to sponsoring NBA stars such as Kevin Garnett, Jamal Crawford, Stephon Marbury, and Latrell Sprewell. The AND1 Mixtape Tour collaborated with ESPN from 2002 through 2008 to broadcast live on the sports network. Business took a turn and they had a break in the 2000s, then they made a comeback in 2010 with the AND1 Live Streetball Tour.
Renowned AND1 streetballers like “Skip 2 My Lou”, “The Professor”, “Hot Sauce”, “The Main Event”, and “Shane the Dribbling Machine” can be seen in the official trailer for the documentary, which was directed by Oscar-nominated director Kevin Wilson Jr. Wilson recalls that the AND1 Mixtape Tour brought streetball to communities that couldn’t afford to attend NBA and NCAA games.
“To tell the story of AND1 you have to tell the story of grit, passion, perseverance and an undying love of the game of basketball,” said Wilson. “Not only is this the story of streetball legends who kicked off a culture shifting movement and lived out their dreams to get paid to hoop when virtually everyone else shut them out. It’s also the story of regular people around the world who, because of AND1, finally gained access to the energy and pandemonium of in-person high skilled, high energy basketball.”
The Untold: The Rise and Fall of AND1 Netflix documentary launches on Netflix August 23.
