The first official Colin in Black And White trailer has been revealed
Exploring Colin Kaepernick’s early life, the Colin in Black And White trailer has debuted along with teaser art. Co-created by American filmmaker Ava Duvernay (When They See Us, 13th) and American civil rights activist and former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the upcoming Netflix series is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2021.
The Colin in Black And White trailer covers the story of a high school teenager who just wanted to play sports. Per Netflix, the series “chronicles Kaepernick’s coming of age story, tackling the obstacles of race, class, and culture as the Black adopted child of a white family.”
We can see shots of Colin’s friendships and family portrayed alongside the struggles and hardships he had to overcome as a young black teenager. “Ultra Black” by New York rapper legend Nas can be heard in the background throughout the Colin in Black & White trailer.
This new Netflix limited series stars Jaden Michael as Young Colin Kaepernick, while Nick Offerman and Mary-Louise Parker play the roles of his parents Rick and Teresa. Colin Kaepernick himself also appears as the narrator for the story.
Containing six 30-minute episodes, Colin in Black And White is co-produced by both Duvernay and Kaepernick while featuring Sheldon Candis, Robert Townsend, Angel Kristi Williams, and Kenny Leon as directors for individual episodes. “Colin’s story has much to say about identity, sports, and the enduring spirit of protest and resilience. I couldn’t be happier than to tell this story with the team at Netflix,” said Duvernay.
In a statement made by Colin himself, he mentioned the following: “Too often we see race and Black stories portrayed through a white lens. We seek to give new perspective to the differing realities that Black people face. We explore the racial conflicts I faced as an adopted Black man in a white community, during my high school years. It’s an honor to bring these stories to life in collaboration with Ava for the world to see.”
