Written and directed by Jeymes Samuel, The Book of Clarence tells a biblical story from the point of view of an everyman. Following LaKeith Stanfield’s character Clarence who is a hustler trying to get rid of his debt, he chooses to become a messiah as he crosses paths with Jesus Christ.

In The Book of Clarence teaser trailer, Clarence is seen evangelizing, performing some of his own miracles, and enjoying the benefits of fame and power. However, as everyone has learned from the Bible, you cannot reap without first sowing, and Clarence will eventually have to demonstrate his mettle to the Romans who are eager to put an end to this pretend messiah.

“Clarence is a person that doesn’t believe in anything outside of what’s in front of him, what he can see and hear,” Samuel told Vanity Fair. “Clarence has a lot of inside belief. He has a lot of inside confidence. This man is sure he could fly. He reminds me of me growing up, but unlike me, he has no outside faith. I think it’s just a really interesting vantage point to explore living in that particular time and place, where most everyone around him is speaking about the Messiah.”

Clarence is not a devoted religious man, becoming a Messiah with only the focus on his own personal gain, despite the fact that he is undoubtedly intrigued by Jesus. He then discovers himself becoming more closely connected to his faith as his journey goes on.

“I’m Clarence, I’m not a man without fault,” says LaKeith Stanffield in The Book of Clarence teaser . “I played the cards I was dealt.”

The film also stars Omar Sy, RJ Cyler, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, David Oyelowo, Alfre Woodard and Teyana Taylor. Produced by Jay-Z, the film is scheduled to premiere on January 12, 2024. Watch the full trailer below.
